SaberCats to open inaugural Major League Rugby season
The Houston SaberCats open their inaugural season in Major League Rugby at 2 p.m. Saturday against New Orleans at Dyer Stadium.
The Houston franchise has gone 12-2-2 in exhibition games since it started play in November.
The SaberCats are one of seven teams in the newly formed Major League Rugby. They have been playing at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, but will switch to Dyer for the season.
The team has approval to build a new stadium south of Houston for the 2019 season.
The team is coached by Justin Fitzpatrick, who spent most of his playing career in Ireland. He also has served as an assistant coach of the U.S. national team.
“It has been a fantastic build-up to the start of the league,” Fitzpatrick said after the team’s exhibition season. “As a group, we have come together and learned a lot about each other and ourselves.”
