About The Houston SaberCats
Team History
In 2017, a local rugby club, the Houston Strikers, decided to rebrand their team and become one of the founding members of Major League Rugby. The club’s management was excited to choose a new name, justifying that the change would reflect a positive and stronger image for their organization. Thus, the Houston SaberCats were born.
Houston played an exhibition season at Constellation Field, home of the Space Cowboys, a AAA minor league baseball affiliate of the Houston Astros. Following this season, the SaberCats played at Dyer Stadium in Houston. Soon after, the Houston City Council agreed to the construction of a $3.2 million rugby stadium, which was completed in 2019. All Houston SaberCats home matches are played at SaberCats Stadium.
The SaberCats are a diverse group of athletes who have traveled from around the globe and the nation to play for Houston. Our players reflect the values of the sport, as well as the culture and spirit of rugby.
Major League Rugby
Major League Rugby (MLR) is the premier professional rugby league in North America. Since its inception in 2018 with seven teams, the league expanded to 12 teams for the 2024 season.
Rugby is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, benefiting from both domestic enthusiasm and a vast global fan base. The evolution of rugby in the U.S. is a uniquely American tale. Originally rooted in the Northeast, the sport has spread across the country, supported by thousands of local men’s, women’s, and youth clubs competing at various levels. MLR aims to unify these passionate fans under a single banner as rugby solidifies its place in the American sports landscape.
