As the top-seeded SaberCats prepare for the postseason and their season-long push for the Major League Rugby shield, their immediate goals are simple: keeping the main thing the main thing.

That involves a singular focus on every weekly opponent.

The 13-1 SaberCats return to action on the road Sunday against the 9-5 San Diego Legion.
Riding an eight-game winning streak, the Western Conference champion SaberCats are coming off a 28-25 victory over the Seattle Seawolves that clinched home-field advantage in the playoffs.

“We take it game by game, but it’s a big picture,” Christian Dyer said. “We’re trying to get to the finals.”

The top four sides from both the Western Conference and Eastern Conference, respectively, compete in the playoffs.
The SaberCats will face the fourth seed from the Western Conference in the semifinals on July 20. The Major League Rugby championship is Aug. 4 at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, the site of the SaberCats’ match this week.

“We just keep it up,” Justin Basson said. “We go to San Diego and we keep going. It’s definitely a tough one, but every game is tough.”

The SaberCats have overcome injuries and adapted to multiple lineup changes while juggling a talented roster and implementing matchup strategies on a weekly basis.

“I’m very proud of the guys,” SaberCats director Heyneke Meyer said. “We still have two games left. We’ve had some injuries. We have a long way to go. The only thing that counts is the last few games, but I’m very happy about the performance.”
